.GIFs. Project#2
I learned something new do this project:) a GIF or Graphics Interchange Format is tiny animation. Well to sound more professional for those dital desigers out there according to Wikipedia a GIF “is a bitmap imange format or a data struture representing a generally rectangle grid of pixels, the imanges stored in imange files with different formats. The formats supports up to 8 bits per pixal, allowing a single imange to refencea palette of up to 256 colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. GIF imanges are compressed using the (LZW) Lempel-Zir-Welch lossless data compression technique to reduce the file size without degrading the visual quailty.” there you are!

For this reading assignment we as a class had to read and discover the second chapter within our digital art books. We had to answer the question ‘what is the difference between using digital technologies as a tool verses a medium?’ Well to start off with a medium is a technique or material used when creating art. A tool can be a physical object or simply a piece of advice given to create art. I believe that the difference between the two is a medium is perhaps a natural thought process, possibly an certain audience your trying to relate to verse a tool is handed to you, a computer, the software, something to make your art the best it can be. So using certain technologies as a tool can enhance someone’s career or personal life to make it as simple as point and click. We have now in this day and age such advances technology it pretty much does the work for you. For an example such software can download all your photos onto one compact disc, organize them how you please even send them somewhere to become physical prints. Now talking about using digital technologies as a medium would carry you far in certain lines of work and if used often enough and skill level was high could make life easier on the artist. Photoshop and other photo/video programs could transform something bland and boring into an eye-popping piece of art. Christine Paul says within the chapter “one of the pragmatic aspects of digital practice is that information can be infinitely developed, recycled and reproduced in various contexts-it can breed new ideas through recombination.” I find that statement to be completely true to be used a medium. When you can take your experiences and teachings from previous works that you have done then you are using digital technologies to the best of your abilities, using them as techniques and that is the difference then using digital technologies as a tool.

The first chapter, first paragraph within my dital art book states “.. all forms of artistic media will eventually be absorbed into the digital medium, either through digitization or through the use of computers in a specific aspect of processing or production.” I agree with this statement. Due to the obvious fact that this step has already begun to take palce. Most photography is done digitally, once a print is taken its immeditely able for viewing upon a computer screen (which the book discusses later on in the chapter). The fact that this is true, does not mean I like it. On the upside the transformation into a digital world might make lives easier by being able to get material to a client faster and on time, however the risk for the piece of technology breaking is higher thus information and projects lost. Not to mention all the extra frustration when dealing with new high-tech computers that you do not understand, believe me I know from experience.. Mac’s ar suppose to make life easier, it has done completely the oppisite for me.. My poor digital art professor probley thinks I’m specially challenged, theres suppose to be a project (which is done and I love) on this blog but how to grab and jpeg it, is beyond me… I feel helpless lol
